In 1994, Joan began a new series of paintings,
titled "Memories in a Landscape." Inspired by
childhood memories and old photographs of the
family farm, Joan uses the magic realism technique
of "double exposure" to capture the past and the
present in a single image. She creates these works
by gathering historical photographs from family,
friends and historical archives, then melding them
in her mind with her own, present-day colour
photographs to create hybrid images in paint.
Working on both the black and white and colour
images simultaneously, she creates a
three-dimensional result that is truly astounding
and wonderfully unique. This ability to layer paint
and images has allowed Joan to break through the
barrier of time and capture the farming stories of
old before they slip away.
