Artist's
Statement
John Wiles is a Toronto
Sculptor, born in Northhampton, England. Wiles uses
a sense of humour as he investigates the dark and
light side of life and death. His work explores
humanity's relationship with itself and its
environment, including the telestic
planes.
Wiles believes that as a race
we will face extinction unless we take
responsibility for our actions and are accountable
to each other for them. If we are answerable for
our behaviour as individuals, there is a better
chance that our governments and institutions will
behave likewise. Only then can we live in harmony
with the environment.
His use of the electric
kettle, a distinctively Canadian appliance, acts as
a catalyst that melds two aspects of the same idea.
One image is dependent on the other.
